So I was curious what types of homemade setting other people have made. Personally, I've been working on an ancient Greek setting. Mostly I just like the pantheon way better than the Forgotten Realms because most people are generally familiar with the Greek gods.
Here's what I've got so far.
Zeus: Lawful Good, God of Mount Olympus, sky, thunder, and lightning
Hera: Neutral Good, Goddess of marriage and family values
Poseidon: Neutral Good, God of the sea, earthquakes, waves
Athena: Lawful Neutral, Goddess of wisdom, strategy, and order
Apollo: Neutral Good, God of light, knowledge, healing, plague, darkness, the arts, music, poetry, prophesy, and the sun
Artemis: Unaligned, Goddess of the hunt, nature, virginity, and animals
Ares: Lawful Evil, God of war, violence, and bloodshed
Aphrodite: Chaotic Good, Goddess of love, beauty, and desire
Hephaestus: Lawful Good, God of fire and the forge
Hermes: Unaligned, God of commerce, thieves, and games
Dionysus: Chaotic Neutral, God of wine, celebrations, and ecstasy
Hades: Neutral Evil, God of the underworld and death
I'm a little unsure about the whole Good/Evil thing because the Greeks didn't really have that much of an idea of good or evil which is why they don't really have evil deities per-se. Maybe it would be better to group them in chaotic and lawful. Or maybe add the titans and monsters like Typhoeus? I'm still thinking on that.
You also have to incorporate some of the more fantastic elements into the mythology. I'd say that when the world was being created before the gods overthrew the titans, they created the dragons and the giants. Later the Gods overthrew and began creating. Hephaestus created the dwarves and so he is the god most dwarves worship. Likewise, Apollo is responsible for the creation of the elves. Hades rules over the Underdark which also contains the underworld and the River Styx. He also would have created the Illithids.
Lastly, I'm not sure how to make different cultures and races related. I think it would make sense to make Athens an Elven city-state and perhaps Sparta would make sense as Dwarven.
I welcome any thoughts or suggestions and would love to hear what types of settings other people have made.
