There is a not too well known system that I love dearly called Legend, based off of a mix of DnD 3.5 and 4. It plays alot like standard DnD, but classes have tracks that you can swap to give your character flavor. It also allowed you to play non-standard races by swapping a racial track into a base class, which gave even more possibilities to play with. Sadly, it looks like development on the game has stopped, and the forums for this game are pretty much dead. www.ruleofcool.com/get-the-game/ This is a link to get the latest (and possibly last) version of the game, as well as character sheets. If you have played with this system before, what did you think of it? I loved the tools given to you for character creation, as well as the customization for items, but I hated the skill games and token system for social encounters that they put in place.

I love the vertical character progression, most definitely. It makes customizing your character easy and fulfilling. In fact it's the basis for my own system that is still in the works.
I only played a single session, but I found the characters to be too powerful for my tastes. I typically like a grittier game, so I wouldn't ever make it my default system. However, I did have the idea to try and run a RWBY styled game with it, which could be exceedingly fun.
We never got into social encounters, but I can see how that could get annoying with the tokens. Overall, I'd say that it's a good starting point to make a different game. But any further development will obviously have to come from the fans.

The swapping thing you're talking about... I'm pretty sure 3.5 has something like that already in the form of the optional "racial substitution levels".

It did, but the level dice were a real pain to figure out, imo. In Legend, all you had to do was swap tracks, and just keep a couple of restrictions in mind, which made the process alot easier.

Not being familiar with these "tracks", I'm not sure I can compare accurately... but I'm not sure what's so difficult about the racial substitution levels. Most of them are just swapping one feat/ability for another like it but more fitting the race.
