FPX is not a one-to-one translation of the game. There are some setting-based differences to give it more of a 'Pathfinder' feel including changing the names of several things. Chocobos are axebeaks, Guado have been replaced with elves, and the sport is now called Aquaball. In the game, it was called bltizball, but in the game, they also didn't have water breathing spells on and they didn't play in a Force Wall spell.
Many other changes exist also, but that's getting into spoiler territory.

I like this. It makes it feel a lot more Pathfindery; you've also explained how nobody died while playing Drownball.

(This is me, just too lazy to log on right now)
Thank you! It always bothered me, though there are some dialogues in game that say that Blitzball players train themselves to hold their breath for ridiculously stupid lenghts of time ("I've heard the best blitzers can even SLEEP underwater!"). My friend theorized that water in Spira is actually breathable XD But I figured a short-duration Water Breathing made more thematic sense and didn't have to be presented as a class feature or alternate race feature ("Blitzer's Lungs"?).

Maybe they've just been trained to cast the spell? Or maybe they have an item that grants water breathing? or maybe the big bubble's just been enchanted to be breathable? Either way, it makes more sense than simple training.

Right, which is why the players are all enchanted with a short-duration water-breathing as mentioned in the entry for the sport.
