What are people's general thoughts/feelings about 5E so far? I'm interested in starting a new campaign with some friends at college but I'm not sure whether I'd like to stick to 3/3.5E like I'm used to or if 5E is worth the learning curve.

I haven't played 3.5 because I started on 4e but I really like 5e so far and it's really straightforward to get to learning. I recommend it.

I have a TON of experience with 3.5, and my regular group started a game in 5 as soon as it was published just to give it a shot - we liked it so much that we committed to doing our next major campaign in 5. It's very intuitive, and there are some excellent twists to the base classes. If anyone has questions about how gameplay is going or about rules changes, I would LOVE to talk about it!

@tiny In 3.5, I really like playing a bard. I like to do the social interaction and investigation stories. I haven't looked at anything other than the free online information for 5th, is there still a place for that kind of story in it?

We don't have a bard in our party currently, but I can say that during our test session, we successfully talked our way out of every challenge it was possible to talk or way out of :-) (the final challenge was just 'run fast enough to not die') Does that help?

In highschool I had some minor experience with 3.5. That's plenty of time to forget most things about it, so picking 5e up was super simple. I honestly love it. The starter pack was a nice easy way to get back into it even with my first time ever DMing. Looking forward to getting all the bomb-ass 5e books for xmas.

I have been a 3.5 player since I started, and I still swear by it. I played a 4.0 campaign and didn't like the system (although the campaign was really fun), and now I'm joining a 5.0 campaign. I like the system better than 4.0, but I'm still loyal to 3.5 personally. I have created some homebrew content for 5.0, though, if anyone would be interested.
I wanted to play a bard with a more tribal feel to it, so I created a class called "Primal Bard" which takes elements of 5.0 Bard and Barbarian, and melds them with the 3.5 warchanter prestige class in later levels. It's a 20 level progression without the paths feature (although if I release it I might add that in), and I tried to make it fit the same power level as the 5.0 base classes. It's mostly a reproduction of Bard, just with some physical features and a wilder feel to it. It has similar spellcasting to Bard (Charisma based), but the spell list is tweaked a bit.
I also created a homebrew background called "Hunter". It's sort of like Outlander but with a slightly different feel to it. I haven't created the ideals/flaws/personality traits tables (mostly because those don't give you any mechanical benefits), so it's pretty simple: just the essential mechanics.
Let me know if anyone's interested. I'll check back in every few days or so.

I haven't seen much of 5ed, but what I have seen looks pretty good. I would give it a spin if I had the chance. And friends. Probably need those too.

Very happy with 5th Edition so far - for me, it's a "best-of" for D&D. I'm running a game in the Planescape setting at the moment, and we're only at 3rd level but it's been very good. I think changing over from 3e/3.5 would be very easy.

I haven't played much with 5Ed, but I really like what I've read so far. They seem to reward non-traditional (hack-n-slash) role playing more than 4ed (or, as I like to call it, "MMO, the tabletop RPG"). The free sample only touches the tip of the iceberg with the "standard" races/classes

Ugh... I've spent so much over the years on AD&D 2e, 3e and 3.5... I can't justify buying another library of books for another edition. I made that decision before 4e even.

I've been playing for years and I love 5th, even more so than *gasp* 3/3.5. It's got the crunch, but without feeling like the crunch overwhelms the fluff. Also it's way more streamlined than most of the earlier editions without cutting too many quarters. I've had no problems with it in combat or in role-playing situations. I do have a few complaints, but overall they're minor.
