NPC's have always been one of my favourite parts of DnD. I'd like to know some of your favourite interactions with the loveable characters that fill ourtowns. My first ever DM had a running gag with an indeterminate number of identical siblings who ran weapon shops in all the towns. They all had some kind of weapon joke in their name. "Greta Greatsword" "Barry Battleaxe" "Guisarme Arnie" "Lance Lance" All of which of course having the great presence of the great . . .

Our usual GM has an NPC who migrated from his old Star Wars games (in which he was a Jawa) to pretty much everything else when he realized how popular the character was. I'm a relative newcomer to this guy's games, but the (currently a) ratfolk wizard with a specialty in item crafting and mechanical genius named "Jinxie" has completely stolen my heart - especially with the absolutely hilariously adorable voice the GM puts on for him. I love him!
In our current game (I think it's actually Pathfinder, not D&D, but who's counting with awesome NPCs?) he was the genius who invented our airship, the only one in the world, named the Valkyrie by her intrepid crew.

I played an illithid cop once. I was GMing and the setting was a multicultural city where an illithid had happened to set up shop. How did I, in my infinite reason, decide to play this unique character?
I put my hand to my mouth and made my fingers flappy talky tentacles.
My players still talk about the weird ass illithid cop. Best fun I ever had as an NPC.

We had a leader of the local thieves guild known as the Fox. Wo at one point while the two rogues were working with him, we asked the GM, "What does the fox say?". At this point our monk burst out into song, singing the then new song by Ylvis. From then on, someone would begin humming or singing anytime we visited the guild.
