Hello, everyone! I figured, nice new forum, needs something to break the ice, right? So here's my idea, tell everyone how you got your start!
For me, I was introduced through the old D&D board game with my family, but my first actual edition was 2nd, with a healthy dash of house rules to keep play from dragging too much. How about the rest of you?

I fell into it when some friends of mine had me over to play Mage: The Ascension, they started alternating into a standing D&D 3.0/3.5 game they had going. Being handed a pre-made Rouge character sheet and a D20 set is very confusing when your were prepared for a D10 based game.

Wow, yeah, I can see how that would be. I've played Vampire: The Masquerade in the same game universe, it's a very different set-up. Which one did you like better?

Since then I have done a variety of other games and systems, but my favorite overall has been Mage. 3.5/Pathfinder is the only one that we can keep going though.

I was camping with some friends from Boy Scouts when my friend who was an avid D&D player offered to let us play. We played a very abridged version of his own design. Later we got a hold of some 4e books and started playing. We've since transitioned to 5e.

I started off with a group of friends with the D&D board game, which we played for a couple of weeks until we all died and the friend who'd played 3.5 before suggested we try it out. We'd always been board game people but never attempted anything like D&D before. So... The three of us who'd never played before flailed around, and while we still play with our original characters, they had a very rocky start and as a base they kind of sucked, haha. The other mini campaigns we play are all 3.5 too, though a couple of us (as we have the books) want to try 5th at some point.

i'd thought that d&d seemed pretty interesting for a while, but i had no idea how to go about playing it. then, an online friend introduced me to Pathfinder, and sent me copies of most of the books. i decided to round up a group of friends from school to play with me, with an experienced Dark Heresy player as our GM. we ended up playing on skype, at irregular times, and most of the time with players missing, but it was fun for the most part.

A friend of mine organized a GURPS campaign that we would play during lunch breaks at school. In retrospect, I think most of us didn't know what we were doing, but it was extremely fun and got me into pen-and-paper/tabletop RPGs from that point on. I picked up D&D a year or two later.

One of my friends who was trying to encourage me to play had me watch Gamers 2: Darkness Rising... And yeah, silly though it was, that was what made me say, "yeah, this might be fun." :-)

My uncle ran D&D 1st edition when I was 8 and let me play. It was cool, but I am sure I had no idea what I was doing.
My first real game was 3rd in high school.

Not long after version 3.5 was released, I found a starter set in a bookstore. I was around 10 or 11 years old, and I had never heard of dungeons and dragons, but the box art looked cool and I bought it. I got my brother and a couple of friends in on it too. Since none of us actually got a players handbook for the longest time, it took us quite a while to learn how to play the game properly. Our early campaigns were complete messes.

I nearly started years ago, multiple times in fact as I almost took a number of opportunities to "get into" D&D. But after those years of not quite getting started, a few friends invited me to their 3.5 campaign a year or two ago. I didn't even know they played, but I'm glad I accepted the invitation. Many weekends later and I'd consider myself pretty fluent. I just wish I had started back at the first opportunity.

I grew up on stories of 2nd Edition from my dad, who stopped gaming before I was born when his group dissolved. Years down the line, I discovered the 3.5 books some book store or another, bought the Player's Handbook, and was drawn right in. I suddenly had context for all of my dad's old stories, and it wasn't long before I picked up the DMG and Monster Manual, and tried getting a game going. It took a few years after that before I had an actual group to play with, but now that same group has been going (relatively) strong for about eight or nine years now (IIRC). We've yet to actually finish a campaign, but we have one campaign going right now that's looking like it might actually last long enough to see an endgame. Here's hoping.

I grew up in a house full of sci-fi and fantasy books, but none of my family played RPGs and I never had the courage to look for groups in the area. Then, when I started University last year, I joined a University society that did RPGs as well as various other tabletop games and a bit of LARP. Since I first picked up a d20 in a one-shot game of DnD that was going on during the first week of uni, I've never stopped, despite my notorious bad luck with characters (I've only lost 4 this year, it's fine, the dice don't hate me or anything...)

Started playing about a year and a half ago. Before that my only exposure to D&D was from TV depictions of the classic TV "geek" in a basement. My boyfriend was asked to join 4e group and really enjoyed building a character and the first few sessions. Coming back with weird and wonderful stories that didn't make much sense but had him in hysterics. When one of the group dropped out after 2 sessions, I was asked to replace him which I did with some trepidation. Boyfriend sat me down and taught me how encounters work etc. to help prepare me. After the first few sessions I was hooked.
