Hey there,
If you're reading this, you're either darn tootin' curious, or you've actually played AD&D 2e. AD&D was the game that got me into roleplaying. Since I haven't played it in ages, I'll fill this threat, to get people to talk, with a few stories.
I got the books from my brother's. He'd recently passed away and when they asked me what I wanted, I asked for his monstrous manual, because the pictures were so awesome. I got the entire set of books, so DMG, PH and MM, plus some "Complete book of [blank]"s. I'd started reading them eventually when I was old enough. When one day I was walking through high school, a good 12 years ago, I saw someone reading the PHB, someone I didn't really have contact with but had watched play Magic the Gathering a few times. We started talking and a beautiful friendship blossomed and we tried it. Boy, were our first games lame and with misinterpreted rules.
I still remember my first character: Elandra Rayla, an elf rogue. Having horrible charisma she was the bud of everyone's joke. "She so ugly". Then I won at a few "Deck of Many Things" drawings and she had t he highest charisma (and constitution). Oh... you silly Deck of Many things. The next one I played was Nulhad, lord of blades and my DM and I couldn't decide how alignment worked. "So, I want to only hunt bad guys, but when I find them I want to do horrible horrible things to them, like torture. That means I'm good, right?". "No, you're definitely evil".
We played it for years, until one day we stepped into a game shop, because our books were harder and harder to get, and then we learned about 3.5.

Ah yes, the deck of many things!!! It has been both the folly (death) of some characters of mine and the triumph of others. All of those initial D&D experiences sound a lot like mine as well! I only recently, probably within the past year, got a real grasp on what Gygax hoped alignment to be. The rules in these old books are so thick that it's hard to interpret correctly, but that's a part of the fun!

The Deck of Many Things... my Wild Mage broke the game with that one. (15 draws resulting in a pile of levels and magic items along with a few other things.) This nutcase only memorized Nahal's Reckless Dweomer in her 1st level spell slots and referred to using that spell along the lines of "I'm attempting to cast lightning bolt"... and the DM knew, too, that this meant something entirely different than "I'm casting lightning bolt."
The best, however, was my Specialty Priest of Azuth... and it was two things. The first was as simple as making the party cursed-item-proof with his identify special ability. The second was a by-product of being made to roll 3d6 straight down the line, the fact that his stats were 5 in strength and constitution, 16 in dex, intelligence and charisma, and 18 wisdom... so yeah, cleric that's too weak to carry a weapon and/or wear armour, hence picking Azuth as his god... and well, what to put his weapon proficiencies in? All 6 weapon profs into boxing? Sure, why not? (That comes with +1 to hit/damage per proficiency spent, by the way.) And what did he do in combat? Well, he buffed the crap out of everyone, usually to the tune of +7 to hit and +6 to damage (a significant bonus in 2d for those that don't know/remember)... and then when he ran out of buffs to do immediately, unless healing was needed (it usually wasn't due to the buffs he pulled), that's when he buffed himself up to a 16 strength and then started punching people's faces out the back of their heads (see previous notes on boxing and buffs). Impressive for someone with stats that resembled Raistlin's.

We had a rule that a player could get a "freebie" when doing something insanely dangerous- drawing from a Deck of Many Things, for example- that would let them choose what result they would get. It was a way to reward good players and make it feel more cinematic.
This... worked out worse than hoped.
A player- who is a very good player- took an opportunity to draw from a Deck of Many Things. But, knowing that things like "die forever" were in the deck, he wanted a specific card; the Sun, I believe.
I had already drawn from the deck when he asked- and when I looked at the card in my hand, I shit you not, it was the Sun.
Mind = blown.

Most cards are replaced after they are drawn. That means it's very possible to draw the same card 5 times even.

That would make for some entertaining games.
" I draw."
" Void. Die instantly."
" Damn!"
" I'll draw too!"
" Void. Die instantly."
" You've got to be shitting me!"
" I'll draw! Lightning never hits thrice!"
"... Voi-"
" NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

Yeah I had the deck disappear for my players and then find its way back to them later down the line, but I did actually make a real deck and had them draw out of it! It was so much fun for me to see their fear, as drawing the void would suck them all into a black hole type deal. So much chaos.
