For my custom campaign setting I've been improving a number of unintentionally-weakened and already-laughably-underpowered classes, one of which is the Soulborn.
My goals here were (in rough order) to:
Improved Soulborn (As the original soulborn class except as follows)
Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier (Uses Pathfinder-style skill handling, so no 4x kicker at 1st level).
Detect Opposition (Sp): At will, you can attempt to detect the presence of creatures whose alignment has a component opposite your own. This ability works like the detect evil spell, except that it simultaneously detects the two specific alignment components opposed to your own. For example, a lawful good incarnate can detect chaos and detect evil simultaneously, while a chaotic good soulborn can detect law and detect evil simultaneously. This ability reveals all information from both effects in each round as-appropriate.
Smite Opposition (Sp): Keep in mind that Action Points and the Daily-Use Recharging variants are in effect, allowing you recharge this and other daily abilities.
Incarnum Defense (Su): You can also as a full-round action touch up to six allies to grant them all the benefit of your incarnum defense. Instead of one ally, you instead can affect no more than six allies with your incarnum defense, and granting this benefit to more than that instantly ends the effect on the earliest allies to gain this benefit (designate which allies lose it on ties). Further, modify the alignment-specific benefit as follows:
Bonus Feat: At 3rd, 6th, and 11th levels, you gain a bonus feat for which you meet the prerequisites. These feats must be either Shape Soulmeld, an incarnum feat, or be in the prerequisites of an incarnum feat. At 4th, 7th, and 12th levels, you gain a bonus feat for which you meet the prerequisites. These feats must be either Shape Soulmeld or an incarnum feat. These latter three feats grant an additional point of essentia (in addition to their other benefits). This entry replaces the original “Bonus Feat” class feature.
Meldshaping: In the table, the entries for 1st~3rd level should be marked with a dash. Every level thereafter should add an asterisk to the numbers in the soulmelds and essentia columns. Then, append the following to the text of this ability: At the start of each day you gain a number of daily bonus essentia equal to your innate (ignoring penalties/boons, damage, and drain) Charisma bonus, and add half your innate Charisma bonus to your maximum soulborn soulmelds from class level. Keep in mind that the Meldshaping is Different variant is in effect.
Improved Share Incarnum Defense (Su): At 16th level, you can grant your incarnum defense to allies within line of sight from up to medium range (100 + 10 ft./ meldshaper level) away using a standard action or full-round action as normal. Those allies also gain 5 temporary hit points per meldshaper level which last until the shared incarnum defense expires, which has extended an additional 3 rounds (so 6 + your Charisma modifier).
Ex-Soulborns
Add detect opposition and improved share incarnum defense to the list of class features you lose if you change alignment.
I'd appreciate any constructive feedback.
Thank you.
My goals here were (in rough order) to:
- Leave no dead levels.
- Fix the versatility problem (Seriously? It's meldshaping progression is based on the paladin spell progression?)
- Give it the ability to detect things it can smite (like a paladin).
- Give lots of those restricted bonus feats but with minor improvements.

- Lawful Good: Immunity to fear. At level 6 gain immunity to mind-affecting effects and at will you can touch a creature as a standard action to produce a moment of clarity effect.
- Chaotic Good: Immunity to slow and paralysis effects. At level 6 gain the benefit of a freedom of movement effect.
- Lawful Evil: Immunity to exhaustion (anything that causes exhaustion causes fatigue instead). At level 6 gain immunity to nonlethal damage and critical hits.
- Chaotic Evil: Immunity to penalty, damage, or drain to Strength. At level 6 gain immunity to penalty, damage, or drain to Dexterity.
